The Islamic Teachings - Simple and Straightforward

Teachings of Islam explained in simple and concise manner.

Rights of Parents

After Allah  and the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) , parents are the most important relations of a Muslim. As Allah has mentioned His rights in the Holy Quran, He has also highlighted the rights of parents. Parents love their children. They try to provide their children with comfort. They sacrifice their happiness for their children. It is our duty to provide them comfort and try to make them happy. We should never shout at them in their old times. Even after their death, we have been told to keep praying for them and behave nicely with their friends and colleagues.

It is reported on the authority of ‘Abdullah that the Messenger (ﷺ) of Allah observed:

“The best of’ the deeds is the (observance of) prayer at its proper time and kindness to the parents”.[ Sahih Muslim]

Allah says in the Quran:

And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.[Al-Quran 31:14]

Abu Umama says that I asked from the Prophet (ﷺ) :
“What is the place of mother in Islam?” He replied:” Paradise is in the footsteps of mother.”
Parents care for their children with great love and sacrifice. It is important that the children be thankful to their parents from the deepest depths of their hearts.
Allah says in the Quran:

And to parents do good [Al-Quran 2:83; 4:36; 6:151]

Especially in their old days we should not hurt our parents. In their old days their tolerance level becomes less and they become sensitive.

Abdullah bin Amr narrated that:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The Lord’s pleasure is in the parent’s pleasure, and the Lord’s anger is in the parent’s anger.”(Hasan).[ Jami-at-Tirmidhi]

Ibn-e-Abbass narrates that the Holy Prophet (ﷺ)  said:

“If a child gives a loving sight to his parents Allah (swt) grants him the goodness of one Hajj.

Allah (swt) has taught us a supplication for our parents:

Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established.”[Al-Quran 14:41]

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said. “It is one of the greatest sins that a man should curse his parents.” It was asked (by the people), “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! How does a man curse his parents?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “‘The man abuses the father of another man and the latter abuses the father of the former and abuses his mother.” [ Sahih al-Bukhari]

Allah says in the Quran:

And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.”[Al-Quran 46:15]
